Responsible Voter
This
election has the potential to be one of more critical elections that the New
Zealand voter and responsible fire arms owners have ever faced. The outcome
of this may not be clear cut and we may see smaller parties able to dictate
quite strong terms before giving their support to form a government. This is
a factor of MMP, and we have seen this in action previously with minor
party’s policies being progressed as a condition of support to form a
government.
The
Electoral Finances Act will impact on the abilities of the media and
interested groups to disseminate information that supports any particular
view point, or more importantly criticises a candidate or party.
COLFO
has taken the stance that we shall make every effort to ensure firearms
owners are informed in relation to all the parties policies and more
importantly how their firearms policies will affect licensed firearms
owners.
To this
end you will soon be getting responsible voter bumper stickers which will be
supplied through your affiliated national body. This will help to remind
politicians that we are interested in their party policies.
The
COLFO position is clearly outlined in our published policies and our
constitution.
New
Zealand firearms laws are recognised internationally as some of the best
laws in the world and COLFO will be doing everything possible to ensure that
the New Zealand shooting fraternity continue to enjoy our sporting
activities as we have to date.
Please
review the policies of the various parties and if in doubt ask them what
their policies mean, and how they will effort your sport going forward
Let them
know that this is important to you, and where you find politicians with
policies that you feel support your own position, offer them fiscal and
support with their campaigning
Please
encourage your local clubs to offer local politicians the opportunity to
address your members, or have them attend public meetings to show support,
or to question policies.
COLFO
will be approaching all the major political parties to try to obtain their
position on firearms legislation and we shall disseminate this to the
members through your national bodies and this web site.
In the
interim I have placed some links to NZ political parties below to help you
find what they have to say on various subjects.
